The Modern Dance Performance “Beach Birds” of the famous choreographer Merce Cunningham has been the initial spark for this coat rack. The short movements of ten to twenty dancers cut into pieces and remixed in a new version has been fascinating as the motions as parts were known but unknown in their new composition.

chance

I have utilized a number of different chance operations, but in principle it involves working out a large number of dance phrases, each separately, then applying chance to discover the continuity… It led to new discoveries as how to get from one movement to the next, presenting almost constantly situations in which the imagination is challenged.

The basis of the production process is the decision to bend or not to bend the rod every 5 cm. The second decision is in which direction one should bend the rod. There is a basic design on a plan, but many decisions have been made in the process in relation to the neighbouring rods. It is similar to a swarm of birds where each individual bird is depending on its fellow birds around him. The coat rack could easily have a different shape and still look similar.
